Governance & Natural Resources
The Governance and Natural Resources Department (“GNR”) serves a variety of functions for Sumas First Nation (“Semá:th”). The GNR Department is mandated by the Chief and Council to help serve the needs of the community in relation to Off Reserve issues. Areas of responsibility include, litigation, negotiations, reconciliation discussions, referral processes, and relationship building for example.

Sumas First Nation provides educational support to Kindergarten to Grade 12 and financial support to post-secondary students.

The role of the department is to assist Council to strengthen the effectiveness, efficiency and accountability of its operation. The team provides support and advice to all operating departments within the organization to assist them in accomplishing their financial and technological objectives.

In partnership with Sto:lo Nation Health Services, Fraser Health Authority, Fraser Valley Aboriginal Child & Family Services, First Nation Health Authority and the R.C.M.P., Sumas provides a wide variety of health services for Sumas and Community members.

At Sumas First Nation, we take the safety and well-being of our community seriously. Our dedicated Emergency Department plays a crucial role in ensuring that we are prepared for any eventuality, particularly when it comes to emergency situations, including wildfires, floods, and other unforeseen emergency events.
