Sumas First Nation hosted the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure at our Community Hall on October 22nd.
This relationship-building event allowed us to gather SFN staff, members of the community, and key staff from the Ministry together on Semá:th territory to share a meal and discuss the upcoming Highway 1 Expansion project.
We were delighted to host the ministry and used this opportunity to have our community members speak about the importance of Indigenous input and knowledge as it relates to the Highway 1 expansion – a project that runs through Semá:th traditional territory and modern-day reserve lands.
We are looking forward to continuing these conversations as we move forward with important and pressing infrastructure projects like this. We want to extend our gratitude to the members of our community for attending and speaking – their words guide our approach to all such projects and we are so grateful for their input.
We also want to thank the Ministry for their gracious attention as our Elders spoke and gave their valuable input, and for their time touring key locations throughout the day and into the evening for dinner. We also want to thank them for the beautiful artwork that was gifted to us – a representation of Semá:th’s legacy as the fierce wolf people.
