Sumas First Nation Hosts First Salmon Ceremony.

Semá:th Territory, Abbotsford, BC, August 10, 2021— Today, Sumas First Nation (Semá:th) is hosting an annual Salmon Ceremony. Various Members, Chief and Council, and key stakeholders will gather together to witness monumental Cultural work. On August 3, 2021, Sumas First Nation will host their Salmon Processing Ceremony and special invitations to honoured guests have been sent out.

Reconnecting to our cultural ways will provide immense knowledge to our people. When you are immersed within the culture, you learn and develop your own skillsets. Sumas First Nation reaffirms our inherent right to all land, mountains, minerals, trees, lakes, rivers, streams and resources extending through our traditional lands. Councillor Murray Ned further elaborated that “As Semá:th and Wolf Peoples we honour, conserve and protect salmon and all other living things”. It is a part of our Indigenous ways to protect the salmon, which is a major staple within our diets since time immemorial.  

This ceremony is integral for our people. Councillor Chris Silver says “S’ólh Téméxw te íkw’élò. Xólhmet temekw’ stám ít kwelát. This is our land we must look after everything that belongs to us. This work not only helps us connect as an Indigenous community, but as well with our neighbouring communities and stakeholders”.

Sumas First Nation is a robust Indigenous Community located near Abbotsford, BC. Sumas has approximately 350 members and currently resides on a reserve land base of approximately 600 acres.
